Ik-oamkkaari sati naamu karataa purakhu nirabhau niravairu akaal moorati ajoonee saibhann guraprsaadi ||

You create the creatures, and gazing on them, you know them. ||1||

गुर कै सबदि तरे मुनि केते इंद्रादिक ब्रहमादि तरे ॥

Gur kai sabadi tare muni kete ianddraadik brhamaadi tare ||

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, so many silent sages have been saved; Indra and Brahma have also been saved.

Sanak sananddan tapasee jan kete gur parasaadee paari pare ||1||

Sanak, Sanandan and many humble men of austerity, by Guru's Grace, have been carried across to the other side. ||1||

Without the Word of the Shabad, how can anyone cross over the terrifying world-ocean?

नाम बिना जगु रोगि बिआपिआ दुबिधा डुबि डुबि मरीऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Naam binaa jagu rogi biaapiaa dubidhaa dubi dubi mareeai ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the world is entangled in the disease of duality, and is drowned, drowned, and dies. ||1|| Pause ||

गुरु देवा गुरु अलख अभेवा त्रिभवण सोझी गुर की सेवा ॥

Guru devaa guru alakh abhevaa tribhava(nn) sojhee gur kee sevaa ||

The Guru is Divine; the Guru is Inscrutable and Mysterious. Serving the Guru, the three worlds are known and understood.

Aape daati karee guri daatai paaiaa alakh abhevaa ||2||

The Guru, the Giver, has Himself given me the Gift; I have obtained the Inscrutable, Mysterious Lord. ||2||

मनु राजा मनु मन ते मानिआ मनसा मनहि समाई ॥

Manu raajaa manu man te maaniaa manasaa manahi samaaee ||

The mind is the king; the mind is appeased and satisfied through the mind itself, and desire is stilled in the mind.

मनु जोगी मनु बिनसि बिओगी मनु समझै गुण गाई ॥३॥

Manu jogee manu binasi biogee manu samajhai gu(nn) gaaee ||3||

The mind is the Yogi, the mind wastes away in separation from the Lord; singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, the mind is instructed and reformed. ||3||

गुर ते मनु मारिआ सबदु वीचारिआ ते विरले संसारा ॥

Gur te manu maariaa sabadu veechaariaa te virale sanssaaraa ||

How very rare are those in this world who, through the Guru, subdue their minds, and contemplate the Word of the Shabad.

O Nanak, our Lord and Master is All-pervading; through the True Word of the Shabad, we are emancipated. ||4||1||2||

नैनी द्रिसटि नही तनु हीना जरि जीतिआ सिरि कालो ॥

Nainee drisati nahee tanu heenaa jari jeetiaa siri kaalo ||

The eyes lose their sight, and the body withers away; old age overtakes the mortal, and death hangs over his head.

रूपु रंगु रहसु नही साचा किउ छोडै जम जालो ॥१॥

Roopu ranggu rahasu nahee saachaa kiu chhodai jam jaalo ||1||

Beauty, loving attachment and the pleasures of life are not permanent. How can anyone escape from the noose of death? ||1||

ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਇਓ ॥

O mortal, meditate on the Lord - your life is passing away!

साच सबद बिनु कबहु न छूटसि बिरथा जनमु भइओ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Saach sabad binu kabahu na chhootasi birathaa janamu bhaio ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the True Word of the Shabad, you shall never be released, and your life shall be totally useless. ||1|| Pause ||

तन महि कामु क्रोधु हउ ममता कठिन पीर अति भारी ॥

Tan mahi kaamu krodhu hau mamataa kathin peer ati bhaaree ||

Within the body are sexual desire, anger, egotism and attachment. This pain is so great, and so difficult to endure.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਤਰੁ ਤੂ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

गुरमुखि राम जपहु रसु रसना इन बिधि तरु तू तारी ॥२॥

Guramukhi raam japahu rasu rasanaa in bidhi taru too taaree ||2||

As Gurmukh, chant the Lord's Name, and savor it with your tongue; in this way, you shall cross over to the other side. ||2||

ਬਹਰੇ ਕਰਨ ਅਕਲਿ ਭਈ ਹੋਛੀ ਸਬਦ ਸਹਜੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝਿਆ ॥

बहरे करन अकलि भई होछी सबद सहजु नही बूझिआ ॥

Bahare karan akali bhaee hochhee sabad sahaju nahee boojhiaa ||

Your ears are deaf, and your intellect is worthless, and still, you do not intuitively understand the Word of the Shabad.

ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਾਰਿਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਸੂਝਿਆ ॥੩॥

जनमु पदारथु मनमुखि हारिआ बिनु गुर अंधु न सूझिआ ॥३॥

Janamu padaarathu manamukhi haariaa binu gur anddhu na soojhiaa ||3||

The self-willed manmukh wastes this priceless human life and loses it. Without the Guru, the blind person cannot see. ||3||

ਰਹੈ ਉਦਾਸੁ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥

रहै उदासु आस निरासा सहज धिआनि बैरागी ॥

Rahai udaasu aas niraasaa sahaj dhiaani bairaagee ||

Whoever remains detached and free of desire in the midst of desire - and whoever, unattached, intuitively meditates on the Celestial Lord

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੪॥੨॥੩॥

प्रणवति नानक गुरमुखि छूटसि राम नामि लिव लागी ॥४॥२॥३॥

Pr(nn)avati naanak guramukhi chhootasi raam naami liv laagee ||4||2||3||

- prays Nanak, as Gurmukh, he is released. He is lovingly attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4|| ||2||3||

भूंडी चाल चरण कर खिसरे तुचा देह कुमलानी ॥

Bhoonddee chaal chara(nn) kar khisare tuchaa deh kumalaanee ||

His walk becomes weak and clumsy, his feet and hands shake, and the skin of his body is withered and wrinkled.

ਨੇਤ੍ਰੀ ਧੁੰਧਿ ਕਰਨ ਭਏ ਬਹਰੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥੧॥

नेत्री धुंधि करन भए बहरे मनमुखि नामु न जानी ॥१॥

Netree dhunddhi karan bhae bahare manamukhi naamu na jaanee ||1||

His eyes are dim, his ears are deaf, and yet, the self-willed manmukh does not know the Naam. ||1||

ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਗਿ ਆਇ ॥

अंधुले किआ पाइआ जगि आइ ॥

O blind man, what have you obtained by coming into the world?

ਰਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਚਾਲੇ ਮੂਲੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

रामु रिदै नही गुर की सेवा चाले मूलु गवाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Raamu ridai nahee gur kee sevaa chaale moolu gavaai ||1|| rahaau ||

The Lord is not in your heart, and you do not serve the Guru. After wasting your capital, you shall have to depart. ||1|| Pause ||

ਜਿਹਵਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਨਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਜਬ ਬੋਲੈ ਤਬ ਫੀਕੇ ॥

जिहवा रंगि नही हरि राती जब बोलै तब फीके ॥

Jihavaa ranggi nahee hari raatee jab bolai tab pheeke ||

Your tongue is not imbued with the Love of the Lord; whatever you say is tasteless and insipid.

ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਵਿਆਪਸਿ ਪਸੂ ਭਏ ਕਦੇ ਹੋਹਿ ਨ ਨੀਕੇ ॥੨॥

संत जना की निंदा विआपसि पसू भए कदे होहि न नीके ॥२॥

Santt janaa kee ninddaa viaapasi pasoo bhae kade hohi na neeke ||2||

You indulge in slander of the Saints; becoming a beast, you shall never be noble. ||2||

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਾ ਰਸੁ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

अम्रित का रसु विरली पाइआ सतिगुर मेलि मिलाए ॥

Ammmrit kaa rasu viralee paaiaa satigur meli milaae ||

Only a few obtain the sublime essence of the Ambrosial Amrit, united in Union with the True Guru.

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਬਦ ਭੇਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਆਇਆ ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਏ ॥੩॥

जब लगु सबद भेदु नही आइआ तब लगु कालु संताए ॥३॥

Jab lagu sabad bhedu nahee aaiaa tab lagu kaalu santtaae ||3||

As long as the mortal does not come to understand the mystery of the Shabad, the Word of God, he shall continue to be tormented by death. ||3||

ਅਨ ਕੋ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਏਕੋ ਦਰੁ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥

अन को दरु घरु कबहू न जानसि एको दरु सचिआरा ॥

An ko daru gharu kabahoo na jaanasi eko daru sachiaaraa ||

Whoever finds the door of the One True Lord, does not know any other house or door.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੪॥

गुर परसादि परम पदु पाइआ नानकु कहै विचारा ॥४॥३॥४॥

Gur parasaadi param padu paaiaa naanaku kahai vichaaraa ||4||3||4||

By Guru's Grace, I have obtained the supreme status; so says poor Nanak. ||4||3||4||

सगली रैणि सोवत गलि फाही दिनसु जंजालि गवाइआ ॥

Sagalee rai(nn)i sovat gali phaahee dinasu janjjaali gavaaiaa ||

He spends the entire night in sleep; the noose is tied around his neck. His day is wasted in worldly entanglements.

ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਘੜੀ ਨਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

खिनु पलु घड़ी नही प्रभु जानिआ जिनि इहु जगतु उपाइआ ॥१॥

Khinu palu gha(rr)ee nahee prbhu jaaniaa jini ihu jagatu upaaiaa ||1||

He does not know God, who created this world, for a moment, for even an instant. ||1||

What did you bring with you, and what will you take away? Meditate on the Lord, the Most Worthy and Generous Lord. ||1|| Pause ||

ऊंधउ कवलु मनमुख मति होछी मनि अंधै सिरि धंधा ॥

Undhau kavalu manamukh mati hochhee mani anddhai siri dhanddhaa ||

The heart-lotus of the self-willed manmukh is upside-down; his intellect is shallow; his mind is blind, and his head is entangled in worldly affairs.

कालु बिकालु सदा सिरि तेरै बिनु नावै गलि फंधा ॥२॥

Kaalu bikaalu sadaa siri terai binu naavai gali phanddhaa ||2||

Death and re-birth constantly hang over your head; without the Name, your neck shall be caught in the noose. ||2||

डगरी चाल नेत्र फुनि अंधुले सबद सुरति नही भाई ॥

Dagaree chaal netr phuni anddhule sabad surati nahee bhaaee ||

Your steps are unsteady, and your eyes are blind; you are not aware of the Word of the Shabad, O Sibling of Destiny.

सासत्र बेद त्रै गुण है माइआ अंधुलउ धंधु कमाई ॥३॥

Saasatr bed trai gu(nn) hai maaiaa anddhulau dhanddhu kamaaee ||3||

The Shaastras and the Vedas keep the mortal bound to the three modes of Maya, and so he performs his deeds blindly. ||3||

ਖੋਇਓ ਮੂਲੁ ਲਾਭੁ ਕਹ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ॥

खोइओ मूलु लाभु कह पावसि दुरमति गिआन विहूणे ॥

Khoio moolu laabhu kah paavasi duramati giaan vihoo(nn)e ||

He loses his capital - how can he earn any profit? The evil-minded person has no spiritual wisdom at all.

Contemplating the Shabad, he drinks in the sublime essence of the Lord; O Nanak, his faith is confirmed in the Truth. ||4||4||5||

Gur kai sanggi rahai dinu raatee raamu rasani ranggi raataa ||

He remains with the Guru day and night and his tongue savors the savory taste of the Lord's Love.

अवरु न जाणसि सबदु पछाणसि अंतरि जाणि पछाता ॥१॥

Avaru na jaa(nn)asi sabadu pachhaa(nn)asi anttari jaa(nn)i pachhaataa ||1||

He does not know any other; he realizes the Word of the Shabad. He knows and realizes the Lord deep within his own being. ||1||

ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਐਸਾ ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

आपु मारि अपर्मपरि राता गुर की कार कमावै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Aapu maari aparamppari raataa gur kee kaar kamaavai ||1|| rahaau ||

He conquers his self-conceit, and is imbued with the Infinite Lord. He serves the Guru. ||1|| Pause ||

अंतरि बाहरि पुरखु निरंजनु आदि पुरखु आदेसो ॥

Anttari baahari purakhu niranjjanu aadi purakhu aadeso ||

Deep within my being, and outside as well, is the Immaculate Lord God. I bow humbly before that Primal Lord God.

Ghat ghat anttari sarab niranttari ravi rahiaa sachu veso ||2||

Deep within each and every heart, and amidst all, the Embodiment of Truth is permeating and pervading. ||2||

साचि रते सचु अम्रितु जिहवा मिथिआ मैलु न राई ॥

Saachi rate sachu ammmritu jihavaa mithiaa mailu na raaee ||

Those who are imbued with Truth - their tongues are tinged with Truth; they do not have even an iota of the filth of falsehood.

निरमल नामु अम्रित रसु चाखिआ सबदि रते पति पाई ॥३॥

Niramal naamu ammmrit rasu chaakhiaa sabadi rate pati paaee ||3||

They taste the sweet Ambrosial Nectar of the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord; imbued with the Shabad, they are blessed with honor. ||3||

ਗੁਣੀ ਗੁਣੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਾਈ ॥

गुणी गुणी मिलि लाहा पावसि गुरमुखि नामि वडाई ॥

Gu(nn)ee gu(nn)ee mili laahaa paavasi guramukhi naami vadaaee ||

The virtuous meet with the virtuous, and earn the profit; as Gurmukh, they obtain the glorious greatness of the Naam.

Sagale dookh mitahi gur sevaa naanak naamu sakhaaee ||4||5||6||

All sorrows are erased, by serving the Guru; O Nanak, the Naam is our only Friend and Companion. ||4||5||6||

The Naam the Name of the Lord is the wealth and support of all; It is enshrined in the heart, by Guru's Grace.

अमर पदारथ ते किरतारथ सहज धिआनि लिव लाईऐ ॥१॥

Amar padaarath te kirataarath sahaj dhiaani liv laaeeai ||1||

One who gathers this imperishable wealth is fulfilled, and through intuitive meditation, is lovingly focused on the Lord. ||1||

गुरमुखि राम नामु जपि हिरदै सहज सेती घरि जाईऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Guramukhi raam naamu japi hiradai sahaj setee ghari jaaeeai ||1|| rahaau ||

As Gurmukh, meditate on the Name of the Lord in your heart, and you shall return to your home with intuitive ease. ||1|| Pause ||

भरमु भेदु भउ कबहु न छूटसि आवत जात न जानी ॥

Bharamu bhedu bhau kabahu na chhootasi aavat jaat na jaanee ||

Doubt, separation and fear are never eradicated, and the mortal continues coming and going in reincarnation, as long as he does not know the Lord.

बिनु हरि नाम को मुकति न पावसि डूबि मुए बिनु पानी ॥२॥

Binu hari naam ko mukati na paavasi doobi mue binu paanee ||2||

Without the Name of the Lord, no one is liberated; they drown and die without water. ||2||

धंधा करत सगली पति खोवसि भरमु न मिटसि गवारा ॥

Dhanddhaa karat sagalee pati khovasi bharamu na mitasi gavaaraa ||

Busy with his worldly affairs, all honor is lost; the ignorant one is not rid of his doubts.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਧੰਧੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

बिनु गुर सबद मुकति नही कब ही अंधुले धंधु पसारा ॥३॥

Binu gur sabad mukati nahee kab hee anddhule dhanddhu pasaaraa ||3||

Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the mortal is never liberated; he remains blindly entangled in the expanse of worldly affairs. ||3||

ਅਕੁਲ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮੂਆ ॥

अकुल निरंजन सिउ मनु मानिआ मन ही ते मनु मूआ ॥

Akul niranjjan siu manu maaniaa man hee te manu mooaa ||

My mind is pleased and appeased with the Immaculate Lord, who has no ancestry. Through the mind itself, the mind is subdued.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਆ ॥੪॥੬॥੭॥

अंतरि बाहरि एको जानिआ नानक अवरु न दूआ ॥४॥६॥७॥

Anttari baahari eko jaaniaa naanak avaru na dooaa ||4||6||7||

Deep within my being, and outside as well, I know only the One Lord. O Nanak, there is no other at all. ||4||6||7||

जगन होम पुंन तप पूजा देह दुखी नित दूख सहै ॥

Jagan hom punn tap poojaa deh dukhee nit dookh sahai ||

You may give feasts, make burnt offerings, donate to charity, perform austere penance and worship, and endure pain and suffering in the body.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥

राम नाम बिनु मुकति न पावसि मुकति नामि गुरमुखि लहै ॥१॥

Raam naam binu mukati na paavasi mukati naami guramukhi lahai ||1||

But without the Lord's Name, liberation is not obtained. As Gurmukh, obtain the Naam and liberation. ||1||

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਰਥੇ ਜਗਿ ਜਨਮਾ ॥

Raam naam binu birathe jagi janamaa ||

Without the Lord's Name, birth into the world is useless.

ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਵੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਲੀ ਬੋਲੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਿਹਫਲੁ ਮਰਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

बिखु खावै बिखु बोली बोलै बिनु नावै निहफलु मरि भ्रमना ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Bikhu khaavai bikhu bolee bolai binu naavai nihaphalu mari bhrmanaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the Name, the mortal eats poison and speaks poisonous words; he dies fruitlessly, and wanders in reincarnation. ||1|| Pause ||

ਪੁਸਤਕ ਪਾਠ ਬਿਆਕਰਣ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਤਿਕਾਲ ਕਰੈ ॥

पुसतक पाठ बिआकरण वखाणै संधिआ करम तिकाल करै ॥

Pusatak paath biaakara(nn) vakhaa(nn)ai sanddhiaa karam tikaal karai ||

The mortal may read scriptures, study grammar and say his prayers three times a day.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਹਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰਝਿ ਮਰੈ ॥੨॥

बिनु गुर सबद मुकति कहा प्राणी राम नाम बिनु उरझि मरै ॥२॥

Binu gur sabad mukati kahaa praa(nn)ee raam naam binu urajhi marai ||2||

Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, where is liberation, O mortal? Without the Lord's Name, the mortal is entangled and dies. ||2||

ਡੰਡ ਕਮੰਡਲ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਗਵਨੁ ਅਤਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨੁ ਕਰੈ ॥

डंड कमंडल सिखा सूतु धोती तीरथि गवनु अति भ्रमनु करै ॥

Dandd kamanddal sikhaa sootu dhotee teerathi gavanu ati bhrmanu karai ||

Walking sticks, begging bowls, hair tufts, sacred threads, loin cloths, pilgrimages to sacred shrines and wandering all around

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੈ ॥੩॥

राम नाम बिनु सांति न आवै जपि हरि हरि नामु सु पारि परै ॥३॥

Raam naam binu saanti na aavai japi hari hari naamu su paari parai ||3||

- without the Lord's Name, peace and tranquility are not obtained. One who chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, crosses over to the other side. ||3||

ਜਟਾ ਮੁਕਟੁ ਤਨਿ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਈ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਛੋਡਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਗਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥

जटा मुकटु तनि भसम लगाई बसत्र छोडि तनि नगनु भइआ ॥

Jataa mukatu tani bhasam lagaaee basatr chhodi tani naganu bhaiaa ||

The mortal's hair may be matted and tangled upon his head, and he may smear his body with ashes; he may take off his clothes and go naked.

But without the Lord's Name, he is not satisfied; he wears religious robes, but he is bound by the karma of the actions he committed in past lives. ||4||

As many beings and creatures as there are in the water, on the land and in the sky - wherever they are, You are with them all, O Lord.

In an instant You destroy it, and You create it again without a moment's delay. ||2||

By the Guru's Merciful Grace, I have obtained the supreme status. ||3||

Attaching it to possessiveness, He has led it into confusion with doubt. ||2||

Man kai veechaari hukamu bujhi samaa(nn)aa ||3||

By mental contemplation, the mortal realizes the Hukam of the Lord's Command, and merges in Him. ||3||

Ihu manu jaagai isu man kee dubidhaa marai ||4||

Then this mind is awakened, and the duality of this mind is subdued. ||4||

Those humble beings who accept the Will of the Lord, are approved and accepted.

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they bear the insignia of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||3||

So serve the One, whose power supports the Universe.

But it is not the time for them, and so they are of no use. ||1||

Searching my body and mind, I found Him within the home of my own heart.

Dubidhaa manamukh rogi viaape trisanaa jalahi adhikaaee ||

The self-willed manmukhs are afflicted with the disease of duality; they are burnt by the intense fire of desire.

मरि मरि जमहि ठउर न पावहि बिरथा जनमु गवाई ॥१॥

Mari mari jammahi thaur na paavahi birathaa janamu gavaaee ||1||

They die and die again, and are reborn; they find no place of rest. They waste their lives uselessly. ||1||

सिम्रिति सासत्र पड़हि मुनि केते बिनु सबदै सुरति न पाई ॥

Simmmriti saasatr pa(rr)ahi muni kete binu sabadai surati na paaee ||

There are so many silent sages, who read the Simritees and the Shaastras; without the Shabad, they have no clear awareness.

त्रै गुण सभे रोगि विआपे ममता सुरति गवाई ॥२॥

Trai gu(nn) sabhe rogi viaape mamataa surati gavaaee ||2||

All those under the influence of the three qualities are afflicted with the disease; through possessiveness, they lose their awareness. ||2||

Iki aape kaadhi lae prbhi aape gur sevaa prbhi laae ||

O God, you save some, and you enjoin others to serve the Guru.

Hari kaa naamu nidhaano paaiaa sukhu vasiaa mani aae ||3||

They obtain the treasure of the Name of the Lord; peace comes to abide within their minds. ||3||

चउथी पदवी गुरमुखि वरतहि तिन निज घरि वासा पाइआ ॥

Chauthee padavee guramukhi varatahi tin nij ghari vaasaa paaiaa ||

The Gurmukhs dwell in the fourth state; they obtain a dwelling in the home of their own inner being.

Poorai satiguri kirapaa keenee vichahu aapu gavaaiaa ||4||

The Perfect True Guru shows His Mercy to them; they eradicate their self-conceit from within. ||4||

Everyone must serve the One Lord, who created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

Manamukhi dubidhaa sadaa hai rogee rogee sagal sanssaaraa ||

The self-willed manmukh is afflicted with the disease of duality forever; the entire universe is diseased.

ममता कालि सभि रोगि विआपे तिन जम की है सिरि कारा ॥

Mamataa kaali sabhi rogi viaape tin jam kee hai siri kaaraa ||

Death takes all those who are afflicted with the disease of possessiveness. They are subject to the Messenger of Death.

गुरमुखि प्राणी जमु नेड़ि न आवै जिन हरि राखिआ उरि धारा ॥२॥

Guramukhi praa(nn)ee jamu ne(rr)i na aavai jin hari raakhiaa uri dhaaraa ||2||

The Messenger of Death does not even approach that mortal who, as Gurmukh, enshrines the Lord within his heart. ||2||

जिन हरि का नामु न गुरमुखि जाता से जग महि काहे आइआ ॥

Jin hari kaa naamu na guramukhi jaataa se jag mahi kaahe aaiaa ||

One who does not know the Lord's Name, and who does not become Gurmukh - why did he even come into the world?

Gur kee sevaa kade na keenee birathaa janamu gavaaiaa ||3||

He never serves the Guru; he wastes his life uselessly. ||3||

Naanak se poore vadabhaagee satigur sevaa laae ||

O Nanak, those whom the True Guru enjoins to His service, have perfect good fortune.

They obtain the fruits of their desires, and find peace in the Word of the Guru's Bani. ||4||2||12||

Dukh vichi jammai dukhi marai dukh vichi kaar kamaai ||

In pain he is born, in pain he dies, and in pain he does his deeds.

गरभ जोनी विचि कदे न निकलै बिसटा माहि समाइ ॥१॥

Garabh jonee vichi kade na nikalai bisataa maahi samaai ||1||

He is never released from the womb of reincarnation; he rots away in manure. ||1||

Dhrigu dhrigu manamukhi janamu gavaaiaa ||

Cursed, cursed is the self-willed manmukh, who wastes his life away.

गुर का सबदु सभि रोग गवाए जिस नो हरि जीउ लाए ॥

Gur kaa sabadu sabhi rog gavaae jis no hari jeeu laae ||

The Word of the Guru's Shabad cures all diseases; he alone is attached to it, whom the Dear Lord attaches.

Naame naami milai vadiaaee jis no manni vasaae ||2||

Through the Naam, glorious greatness is obtained; he alone obtains it, whose mind is filled with the Lord. ||2||

Satiguru bhetai taa phalu paae sachu kara(nn)ee sukh saaru ||

Meeting the True Guru, the fruitful rewards are obtained. This true lifestyle beings sublime peace.

ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਧਰਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੩॥

से जन निरमल जो हरि लागे हरि नामे धरहि पिआरु ॥३॥

Se jan niramal jo hari laage hari naame dharahi piaaru ||3||

Those humble beings who are attached to the Lord are immaculate; they enshrine love for the Lord's Name. ||3||

तिन की रेणु मिलै तां मसतकि लाई जिन सतिगुरु पूरा धिआइआ ॥

Tin kee re(nn)u milai taan masataki laaee jin satiguru pooraa dhiaaiaa ||

If I obtain the dust of their feet, I apply it to my forehead. They meditate on the Perfect True Guru.

Naanak tin kee re(nn)u poorai bhaagi paaeeai jinee raam naami chitu laaiaa ||4||3||13||

O Nanak, this dust is obtained only by perfect destiny. They focus their consciousness on the Lord's Name. ||4||3||13||

सबदु बीचारे सो जनु साचा जिन कै हिरदै साचा सोई ॥

Sabadu beechaare so janu saachaa jin kai hiradai saachaa soee ||

That humble being who contemplates the Word of the Shabad is true; the True Lord is within his heart.

ਸਾਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਤਾਂ ਤਨਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥

साची भगति करहि दिनु राती तां तनि दूखु न होई ॥१॥

Saachee bhagati karahi dinu raatee taan tani dookhu na hoee ||1||

If someone performs true devotional worship day and night, then his body will not feel pain. ||1||

Everyone calls him, ""Devotee, devotee.""

बिनु सतिगुर सेवे भगति न पाईऐ पूरै भागि मिलै प्रभु सोई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Binu satigur seve bhagati na paaeeai poorai bhaagi milai prbhu soee ||1|| rahaau ||

But without serving the True Guru, devotional worship is not obtained. Only through perfect destiny does one meet God. ||1|| Pause ||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂਲੁ ਗਵਾਵਹਿ ਲਾਭੁ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਲਾਭੁ ਕਿਦੂ ਹੋਈ ॥

मनमुख मूलु गवावहि लाभु मागहि लाहा लाभु किदू होई ॥

Manamukh moolu gavaavahi laabhu maagahi laahaa laabhu kidoo hoee ||

The self-willed manmukhs lose their capital, and still, they demand profits. How can they earn any profit?

ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥੨॥

जमकालु सदा है सिर ऊपरि दूजै भाइ पति खोई ॥२॥

Jamakaalu sadaa hai sir upari doojai bhaai pati khoee ||2||

The Messenger of Death is always hovering above their heads. In the love of duality, they lose their honor. ||2||

बहले भेख भवहि दिनु राती हउमै रोगु न जाई ॥

Bahale bhekh bhavahi dinu raatee haumai rogu na jaaee ||

Trying on all sorts of religious robes, they wander around day and night, but the disease of their egotism is not cured.

पड़ि पड़ि लूझहि बादु वखाणहि मिलि माइआ सुरति गवाई ॥३॥

Pa(rr)i pa(rr)i loojhahi baadu vakhaa(nn)ahi mili maaiaa surati gavaaee ||3||

Reading and studying, they argue and debate; attached to Maya, they lose their awareness. ||3||

Satiguru sevahi param gati paavahi naami milai vadiaaee ||

Those who serve the True Guru are blessed with the supreme status; through the Naam, they are blessed with glorious greatness.

O Nanak, those whose minds are filled with the Naam, are honored in the Court of the True Lord. ||4||4||14||

Manamukh aasaa nahee utarai doojai bhaai khuaae ||

The self-willed manmukh cannot escape false hope. In the love of duality, he is ruined.

उदरु नै साणु न भरीऐ कबहू त्रिसना अगनि पचाए ॥१॥

Udaru nai saa(nn)u na bhareeai kabahoo trisanaa agani pachaae ||1||

His belly is like a river - it is never filled up. He is consumed by the fire of desire. ||1||

हिरदै नामु दुबिधा मनि भागी हरि हरि अम्रितु पी त्रिपताते ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hiradai naamu dubidhaa mani bhaagee hari hari ammmritu pee tripataate ||1|| rahaau ||

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, fills their hearts, and duality runs away from their minds. Drinking in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Lord, Har, Har, they are satisfied. ||1|| Pause ||

आपे पारब्रहमु स्रिसटि जिनि साजी सिरि सिरि धंधै लाए ॥

Aape paarabrhamu srisati jini saajee siri siri dhanddhai laae ||

The Supreme Lord God Himself created the Universe; He links each and every person to their tasks.

Maaiaa mohu keeaa jini aape aape doojai laae ||2||

He Himself created love and attachment to Maya; He Himself attaches the mortals to duality. ||2||

तिस नो किहु कहीऐ जे दूजा होवै सभि तुधै माहि समाए ॥

Tis no kihu kaheeai je doojaa hovai sabhi tudhai maahi samaae ||

If there were any other, then I would speak to him; all will be merged in You.

Guramukhi giaanu tatu beechaaraa jotee joti milaae ||3||

The Gurmukh contemplates the essence of spiritual wisdom; his light merges into the Light. ||3||

सो प्रभु साचा सद ही साचा साचा सभु आकारा ॥

So prbhu saachaa sad hee saachaa saachaa sabhu aakaaraa ||

God is True, Forever True, and all His Creation is True.

कलि महि प्रेत जिन्ही रामु न पछाता सतजुगि परम हंस बीचारी ॥

Kali mahi pret jinhee raamu na pachhaataa satajugi param hanss beechaaree ||

In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, those who do not realize the Lord are goblins. In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, the supreme soul-swans contemplated the Lord.

दुआपुरि त्रेतै माणस वरतहि विरलै हउमै मारी ॥१॥

Duaapuri tretai maa(nn)as varatahi viralai haumai maaree ||1||

In the Silver Age of Dwaapur Yuga, and the Brass Age of Traytaa Yuga, mankind prevailed, but only a rare few subdued their egos. ||1||

In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, glorious greatness is obtained through the Lord's Name.

जुगि जुगि गुरमुखि एको जाता विणु नावै मुकति न पाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jugi jugi guramukhi eko jaataa vi(nn)u naavai mukati na paaee ||1|| rahaau ||

In each and every age, the Gurmukhs know the One Lord; without the Name, liberation is not attained. ||1|| Pause ||

Hiradai naamu lakhai janu saachaa guramukhi manni vasaaee ||

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is revealed in the heart of the True Lord's humble servant. It dwells in the mind of the Gurmukh.

आपि तरे सगले कुल तारे जिनी राम नामि लिव लाई ॥२॥

Aapi tare sagale kul taare jinee raam naami liv laaee ||2||

Those who are lovingly focused on the Lord's Name save themselves; they save all their ancestors as well. ||2||

मेरा प्रभु है गुण का दाता अवगण सबदि जलाए ॥

Meraa prbhu hai gu(nn) kaa daataa avaga(nn) sabadi jalaae ||

My Lord God is the Giver of virtue. The Word of the Shabad burns away all faults and demerits.

ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸੋਹੇ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥੩॥

जिन मनि वसिआ से जन सोहे हिरदै नामु वसाए ॥३॥

Jin mani vasiaa se jan sohe hiradai naamu vasaae ||3||

Those whose minds are filled with the Naam are beautiful; they enshrine the Naam within their hearts. ||3||

Gharu daru mahalu satiguroo dikhaaiaa rangg siu raleeaa maa(nn)ai ||

The True Guru has revealed to me the Lord's Home and His Court, and the Mansion of His Presence. I joyfully enjoy His Love.

जो किछु कहै सु भला करि मानै नानक नामु वखाणै ॥४॥६॥१६॥

Jo kichhu kahai su bhalaa kari maanai naanak naamu vakhaa(nn)ai ||4||6||16||

Whatever He says, I accept as good; Nanak chants the Naam. ||4||6||16||

The desires of the mind are absorbed in the mind,contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

गुर पूरे ते सोझी पवै फिरि मरै न वारो वार ॥१॥

Gur poore te sojhee pavai phiri marai na vaaro vaar ||1||

Understanding is obtained from the Perfect Guru, and then the mortal does not die over and over again. ||1||

गुर परसादि परम पदु पाइआ सभ इछ पुजावणहारु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Gur parasaadi param padu paaiaa sabh ichh pujaava(nn)ahaaru ||1|| rahaau ||

By Guru's Grace, I have obtained the supreme status; the Lord is the Fulfiller of all desires. ||1|| Pause ||

सभ महि एको रवि रहिआ गुर बिनु बूझ न पाइ ॥

Sabh mahi eko ravi rahiaa gur binu boojh na paai ||

The One Lord is permeating and pervading amongst all; without the Guru, this understanding is not obtained.

गुरमुखि प्रगटु होआ मेरा हरि प्रभु अनदिनु हरि गुण गाइ ॥२॥

Guramukhi prgatu hoaa meraa hari prbhu anadinu hari gu(nn) gaai ||2||

My Lord God has been revealed to me, and I have become Gurmukh. Night and day, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||

ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਹੋਰ ਥੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

सुखदाता हरि एकु है होर थै सुखु न पाहि ॥

Sukhadaataa hari eku hai hor thai sukhu na paahi ||

The One Lord is the Giver of peace; peace is not found anywhere else.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੇ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਏ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ॥੩॥

सतिगुरु जिनी न सेविआ दाता से अंति गए पछुताहि ॥३॥

Satiguru jinee na seviaa daataa se antti gae pachhutaahi ||3||

Those who do not serve the Giver, the True Guru, depart regretfully in the end. ||3||

सतिगुरु सेवि सदा सुखु पाइआ फिरि दुखु न लागै धाइ ॥

Satiguru sevi sadaa sukhu paaiaa phiri dukhu na laagai dhaai ||

Serving the True Guru, lasting peace is obtained, and the mortal does not suffer in pain any longer.

नानक हरि भगति परापति होई जोती जोति समाइ ॥४॥७॥१७॥

Naanak hari bhagati paraapati hoee jotee joti samaai ||4||7||17||

Nanak has been blessed with devotional worship of the Lord; his light has merged into the Light. ||4||7||17||

Baajhu guroo jagatu bauraanaa bhoolaa chotaa khaaee ||

Without the Guru, the world is insane; confused and deluded, it is beaten, and it suffers.

ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਦਰ ਕੀ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥

मरि मरि जमै सदा दुखु पाए दर की खबरि न पाई ॥१॥

Mari mari jammai sadaa dukhu paae dar kee khabari na paaee ||1||

It dies and dies again, and is reborn, always in pain, but it is unaware of the Lord's Gate. ||1||

Mere man sadaa rahahu satigur kee sara(nn)aa ||

O my mind,remain always in the Protection of the True Guru's Sanctuary.

हिरदै हरि नामु मीठा सद लागा गुर सबदे भवजलु तरणा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hiradai hari naamu meethaa sad laagaa gur sabade bhavajalu tara(nn)aa ||1|| rahaau ||

Those people, to whose hearts the Lord's Name seems sweet, are carried across the terrifying world-ocean by the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||1|| Pause ||

ਭੇਖ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਡੋਲੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥

भेख करै बहुतु चितु डोलै अंतरि कामु क्रोधु अहंकारु ॥

Bhekh karai bahutu chitu dolai anttari kaamu krodhu ahankkaaru ||

The mortal wears various religious robes, but his consciousness is unsteady; deep within, he is filled with sexual desire, anger and egotism.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਿਸਾ ਭੂਖ ਅਤਿ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਭਉਕਤ ਫਿਰੈ ਦਰ ਬਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

अंतरि तिसा भूख अति बहुती भउकत फिरै दर बारु ॥२॥

Anttari tisaa bhookh ati bahutee bhaukat phirai dar baaru ||2||

Deep within is the great thirst and immense hunger; he wanders from door to door. ||2||

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥

गुर कै सबदि मरहि फिरि जीवहि तिन कउ मुकति दुआरि ॥

Gur kai sabadi marahi phiri jeevahi tin kau mukati duaari ||

Those who die in the Word of the Guru's Shabad are reborn; they find the door of liberation.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੩॥

अंतरि सांति सदा सुखु होवै हरि राखिआ उर धारि ॥३॥

Anttari saanti sadaa sukhu hovai hari raakhiaa ur dhaari ||3||

With constant peace and tranquility deep within, they enshrine the Lord within their hearts. ||3||

ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵੈ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

जिउ तिसु भावै तिवै चलावै करणा किछू न जाई ॥

Jiu tisu bhaavai tivai chalaavai kara(nn)aa kichhoo na jaaee ||

As it pleases Him, He inspires us to act. Nothing else can be done.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੪॥੮॥੧੮॥

नानक गुरमुखि सबदु सम्हाले राम नामि वडिआई ॥४॥८॥१८॥

Naanak guramukhi sabadu samhaale raam naami vadiaaee ||4||8||18||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh contemplates the Word of the Shabad, and is blessed with the glorious greatness of the Lord's Name. ||4||8||18||

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਖੁਆਇਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਖਟੇ ਦੁਖ ਖਾਇ ॥

हउमै माइआ मोहि खुआइआ दुखु खटे दुख खाइ ॥

Haumai maaiaa mohi khuaaiaa dukhu khate dukh khaai ||

Lost in egotism, Maya and attachment, the mortal earns pain, and eats pain.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭ ਹਲਕੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਭਰਮਾਇ ॥੧॥

अंतरि लोभ हलकु दुखु भारी बिनु बिबेक भरमाइ ॥१॥

Anttari lobh halaku dukhu bhaaree binu bibek bharamaai ||1||

The great disease, the rabid disease of greed, is deep within him; he wanders around indiscriminately. ||1||

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸੈਸਾਰਿ ॥

मनमुखि ध्रिगु जीवणु सैसारि ॥

Manamukhi dhrigu jeeva(nn)u saisaari ||

The life of the self-willed manmukh in this world is cursed.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਹੀ ਚੇਤਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

राम नामु सुपनै नही चेतिआ हरि सिउ कदे न लागै पिआरु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Raam naamu supanai nahee chetiaa hari siu kade na laagai piaaru ||1|| rahaau ||

He does not remember the Lord's Name, even in his dreams. He is never in love with the Lord's Name. ||1|| Pause ||

ਪਸੂਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਕੂੜੋ ਹੋਇ ॥

पसूआ करम करै नही बूझै कूड़ु कमावै कूड़ो होइ ॥

Pasooaa karam karai nahee boojhai koo(rr)u kamaavai koo(rr)o hoi ||

He acts like a beast, and does not understand anything. Practicing falsehood, he becomes false.
