पूरा सतिगुरु जाणीऐ पूरे पूरा थाटु बणाइआ ।

pooraa satigur jaaneeai poore pooraa thaatt banaaeaa |

One should understand the perfect true Guru who has created the grandeur (of creation) around.

The perfect has created the complete love for the Lord and has ordained the gurmukh way of life.

The sight of perfect is perfect and the same perfect has caused to hear the perfect word.

His sitting is also perfect, and his throne is also perfect.

The holy congregation is the abode of truth (sachkhand) and being kind to the devotee, He is in the possession of the devotees.

sach roop sach naau gur giaan dhiaan sikhaa samajhaaeaa |

The Guru, out of his sheer love for the Sikhs, has made them understand the true nature of the Lord, the true name and the knowledge-producing meditation.

karan kaaran samarath hai saadhasangat daa karai karaaeaa |

All competent God Himself is the efficient as well as material cause of all but He does everything according to the will of the holy congregation.

ਭਰੈ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਦਾ ਦੇਇ ਦਿਵਾਇਆ ।

भरै भंडार दातारु है साधसंगति दा देइ दिवाइआ ।

bharai bhanddaar daataar hai saadhasangat daa dee divaaeaa |

The stores of that bestower are full but he gives according to the wishes of the holy congregation.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗੁਰ ਰੂਪੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ।

पारब्रहम गुर रूपु होइ साधसंगति गुर सबदि समाइआ ।

paarabraham gur roop hoe saadhasangat gur sabad samaaeaa |

That transcendental Brahm, by being the Guru, merges the holy congregation into the Word, shabad.

ਜਗ ਭੋਗ ਜੋਗ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਪਰੇ ਨ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ।

जग भोग जोग धिआनु करि पूजा परे न दरसनु पाइआ ।

jag bhog jog dhiaan kar poojaa pare na darasan paaeaa |

His glimpse cannot be had by performing of yajna, offering sweets, yoga, concentration, ritualistic worship and ablutions.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਿਉ ਪੁਤੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਿਤਾ ਖਾਇ ਪੈਨ੍ਹੈ ਪੈਨ੍ਹਾਇਆ ।

साधसंगति पिउ पुतु होइ दिता खाइ पैन्है पैन्हाइआ ।

Fellows in the holy congregation maintain father-son relationship with the Guru, and whatever he gives to eat and put on, they eat and wear.

Getting up at the ambrosial hour of morning, the Sikhs bathe in the river.

सहजि समाधि अगाधि विचि इक मनि होइ गुर जापु जपंदे ।

sehaj samaadh agaadh vich ik man hoe gur jaap japande |

By putting their mind in the unfathomable God through deep concentration, they remember Guru, the God by reciting Japu (Ji).

Getting fully activated then they go to join the holy congregation of the saints.

sabad surat liv leen hoe satigur baanee gaae sunande |

Becoming absorbed in remembering and loving the Shabad, they sing and hear the Guru's hymns, Gurbani.

भाइ भगति भै वरतिमानि गुर सेवा गुरपुरब करंदे ।

bhaae bhagat bhai varatimaan gur sevaa gurapurab karande |

They love to spend their time in meditation, service and fear of God and they serve the Guru by observing his anniversaries.

ਸੰਝੈ ਸੋਦਰੁ ਗਾਵਣਾ ਮਨ ਮੇਲੀ ਕਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲੰਦੇ ।

संझै सोदरु गावणा मन मेली करि मेलि मिलंदे ।

sanjhai sodar gaavanaa man melee kar mel milande |

They sing the Sodar in the evening and heartily associate with one another.

ਰਾਤੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਆਰਤੀ ਪਰਸਾਦੁ ਵੰਡੰਦੇ ।

राती कीरति सोहिला करि आरती परसादु वंडंदे ।

raatee keerat sohilaa kar aaratee parasaad vanddande |

At night, having recited the Sohila and Aarti and made the supplication, they distribute the sacred food (prasad).

Thus gurmukhs gladly taste the fruit of happiness.

eik kavaau pasaau kar oankaar akaar pasaaraa |

The Oankar Lord, with one resonance, created the forms.

ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੋ ਧਰਤਿ ਅਗਾਸੁ ਧਰੇ ਨਿਰਧਾਰਾ ।

पउण पाणी बैसंतरो धरति अगासु धरे निरधारा ।

paun paanee baisantaro dharat agaas dhare niradhaaraa |

Air, water, fire, sky and earth He sustained (in his order) without any support.

ਰੋਮ ਰੋਮ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਵਰਭੰਡ ਕਰੋੜਿ ਅਕਾਰਾ ।

rom rom vich rakhion kar varabhandd karorr akaaraa |

Crores of universe exist in his each trichome.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰਾ ।

पारब्रहमु पूरन ब्रहमु अगम अगोचरु अलख अपारा ।

paarabraham pooran braham agam agochar alakh apaaraa |

He, the transcendental Brahm, is the complete (within and without), inaccessible, imperceptible, incomprehensible and infinite.

He remains in the control of loving devotion and by becoming kind to the devotees, He creates.

He is the subtle seed that takes form of the large tree of creation.

fal vich beeo samaae kai ik doon beeahu lakh hajaaraa |

The fruits contain seeds and then from one seed, lakhs of fruits are created.

The sweet fruit of Gurmukhs is the love of Lord and the Gursikhs love the true Guru.

In the holy congregation, the abode of truth, the supreme formless Lord resides.

The Guru's word is the air, the Guru and wondrous lord has recited Word the Guru.

The father of man is water, which by flowing downwards teaches humility.

dharatee maat mehat kar ot pot sanjog banaaeaa |

The earth being tolerant like mother is the mother and is the further base of all the creatures.

The day and night are the nurses who keep the people of child-wisdom busy in the plays of the world.

गुरमुखि जनमु सकारथा साधसंगति वसि आपु गवाइआ ।

guramukh janam sakaarathaa saadhasangat vas aap gavaaeaa |

The life of Gurmukh is meaningful because he, in the holy congregation, has lost his ego.

ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣਹੁ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ ।

जंमण मरणहु बाहरे जीवन मुकति जुगति वरताइआ ।

jaman maranahu baahare jeevan mukat jugat varataaeaa |

He becoming liberated in life, behaves in the world with the skill to come out of the cycle of transmigration.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਤਾ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਮੋਖ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ।

गुरमति माता मति है पिता संतोख मोख पदु पाइआ ।

guramat maataa mat hai pitaa santokh mokh pad paaeaa |

The mother of the gurmukhs is the wisdom of the Guru (Gurmat) and father, the contentment, through whom they attain deliverance.

ਧੀਰਜੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਭਿਰਾਵ ਦੁਇ ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਪੁਤ ਜਣਾਇਆ ।

धीरजु धरमु भिराव दुइ जपु तपु जतु सतु पुत जणाइआ ।

dheeraj dharam bhiraav due jap tap jat sat put janaaeaa |

Forbearance and the sense of duty are their brothers, and meditation, austerities, continence are the sons.

ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲਾ ਚੇਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਪੁਰਖਹੁ ਪੁਰਖ ਚਲਤੁ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ ।

गुर चेला चेला गुरू पुरखहु पुरख चलतु वरताइआ ।

gur chelaa chelaa guroo purakhahu purakh chalat varataaeaa |

The Guru and the disciple are diffused into one another in equanimity and they both are the extension of the perfect supreme Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ।੫।

Having realized the supreme pleasure, they have made others also realize the same.

par ghar jaae paraahunaa aasaa vich niraas valaae |

The guest, in the house of other person, remains unconcerned among many expectations.

ਪਾਣੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਵਲ ਜਿਉ ਸੂਰਜ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਰਹਾਏ ।

पाणी अंदरि कवल जिउ सूरज धिआनु अलिपतु रहाए ।

paanee andar kaval jiau sooraj dhiaan alipat rahaae |

Lotus too in the water concentrates upon sun and remains uninfluenced by water.

ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲੇ ਦੀ ਸੰਧਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ।

सबद सुरति सतिसंगि मिलि गुर चेले दी संधि मिलाए ।

sabad surat satisang mil gur chele dee sandh milaae |

Likewise in the holy congregation, the Guru and disciple meet through word (sabad) and meditative faculty(surati).

ਚਾਰਿ ਵਰਨ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਹੋਇ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਚ ਖੰਡ ਵਸਾਏ ।

चारि वरन गुरसिख होइ साधसंगति सच खंड वसाए ।

chaar varan gurasikh hoe saadhasangat sach khandd vasaae |

People of the four varnas, by becoming followers of the Guru (Gursikh), reside in the abode of truth through the holy congregation.

आपु गवाइ तंबोल रसु खाइ चबाइ सु रंग चढ़ाए ।

aap gavaae tanbol ras khaae chabaae su rang charrhaae |

Like the one colored sap of betel-leaf, they shed away their selfhood, and all are colored in their one fast color.

chhia darasan tarasan kharre baarah panth giranth sunaae |

All the six philosophies and the twelve sects of yogis covet by standing away (but do not get that status because of their pride).

छिअ रुति बारह मास करि इकु इकु सूरजु चंदु दिखाए ।

chhia rut baarah maas kar ik ik sooraj chand dikhaae |

Six seasons, twelve months are shown to have one sun and one moon.

But the gurmukhs have fused the sun and the moon into each other, i.e. they have demolished the boundaries of the sattva and the rajas gunas.

As the diamond interlaced with other diamonds goes in the company of jewels, likewise the mind-diamond intertwined with the diamond like Guru Word goes in the string of the holy congregation (satsangat).

Allowing the Guru's instruction to enter their hearts, they speak politely and thus comfort one another.

They go beyond the triveni of ira, pingala and sukhmana and stabilize in their own self.

When they in the form of pleasure-fruit obtain the supreme joy, they go beyond the bondages of body and attain the highest station.

From the waves of the pond, the swans pick up only pearls and gems to eat.

When, the gurmukh, walks to behold the Guru, that is equal to an extremely holy circumambulation.

When the Guru oriented person (Gurmukh) eats and clothes himself, that is equal to the performance of sacrifice and offering.

guramukh savan samaadh hai aape aap na thaap uthaapai |

When the gurmukh sleeps, that is equal to a yogi's trance and the gurmukh never withdraws his thoughts from the object (God, the Guru) of his concentration.

gharabaaree jeevan mukat lehar na bhavajal bhau na biaapai |

The (Gurmukh) householder is liberated in life; he is not afraid of the waves of the world's ocean and fear does not enter his heart.

He accepting the sweet sap of the lotus feet as fundamental, quaffs the joy of love for the supreme.

The way of the gurmukh is beyond the ken of mind and speech and he, in accordance with the wisdom of the Guru and his own steadfast will, treads on it.

Who can describe the importance of the parable (of gurmukh) because it is beyond the Vedas and the Katebas (the holy books of religion).

sees nivaae dteengulee gal bandhe jal uchaa aavai |

To get water from a stream or pond, the dhingali (a pole with a bucket on one end and a fulcrum in the middle used for drawing water) is lowered by catching hold of its neck, i.e. it is humbled forcibly and does not go down of its own.

The owl is not pleased on beholding the sun or chakavi, ruddy sheldrake, the moon.

sinmal birakh na safal hoe chandan vaas na vaans samaavai |

The silk cotton (simbal) tree yields no fruit, and the bamboo grows near the sandal but is not perfumed thereby.
